I live at HG3 3AP and receive Freeview tv from Heyshaw transmitter using a 32element aerial mounted on an external roof mast with a mast amplifier, In fine weather reception is full strength and excellent quality on all channels but when it rains all BBC channels quickly weaken until the picture breaks-up and becomes unwatchable and takes several hours after the rain stops to fully restore. All the commercial channels are unaffected and remain full strength. I have called in an aerial firm who replaced the aerial with the same type but without effect and say that it must be due to the transmitter and not the aerial. I have been told that BBC and Commercial channels use different bandwidths (or something which I do not understand). Can they be affected differently by weather conditions and, if so, can anything be done about it? I have been fed from Heyshaw ever since it opened but have only recently noticed this problem. Please advise me.

Tom Wright: Your just 8km from the transmitter, so signal strength shouldn't be a problem. Frankly, you'd probably be better off with Freesat, looking at the reception you'd get from Belmont, but if your using an aerial, there you are.
The clue is the rain - its most likely you have a problem with your aerial system - rain gets in and kills most of your signal. When it dries out, so they come back. You'll need someone to check your aerial and the cable from the roof.

You cannot see the transmitter because Hartwith Hill is in the way. There also appear to be trees in your vicinity which could be in the way and also no doubt trees on the incline to the Hill.
Signals travel in straight lines. They bend around objects and the way they bend is affected by frequency and the object around which they bend.
Thus, when it rains or when the wind blows (in the case of vegetation) the dispersement of signal in the shadow of the obstruction is likely to change. Whether this is is sufficient to cause interference in reception at the exact location of the aerial is the next question.
The other thing to note, but which I'm not sure could be a factor, is that Heyshaw shares two of its three channels with Belmont. PSB1 (BBC standard definition and radio) is on C60 and PSB3 (high definition services) on C53 are co-channel with two of Belmont's. PSB2 (standard definition commercial services) on C57 are not shared with Belmont.
A terrain plot between you and Belmont shows that it is clear up to about 20 miles which coincides with that after the Vale of York:
