Craigkelly (Fife, Scotland) transmitter
Friday 4 November 2022 5:22PM

Alan Goodall: Craigkelley is only 17km away and you are predicted to get good reception of all 6 PSB & COM multiplexes. You are also predicted to get good reception from Angus, 51km away. The Kinross relay isn't predicted to be receivable at all. How old is the installation? The cables and connections may have degraded somewhere, particularly if they are exposed to the weather.

Dave: That would depend on whether the studios, transmitter and everything in the chain between them still have power. Major broadcasters will have standby generators which would start automatically in the event of a power cut, as do main transmitters. Smaller broadcasters and transmitters which only cover limited area/population may not have these facilities in place.

All free TV channels in the UK
Thursday 17 November 2022 1:08PM

Rick: The number of HD channels on Freeview was reduced with the closure of the temporary COM8 multiplex in 2020 and COM7 in June this year. There isn't any capacity available for any more HD channels unless another multiplex is converted to DVB-T2 (there was a plan announced by the government back in 2011 but it was never put into action).

BBC One HD
Sunday 20 November 2022 10:51PM

It looks like all BBC channels are set to become HD only on satellite next year. The BBC have already announced that HD versions of all BBC One regions will launch on Freeview and satellite early in 2023 (Virgin Media and Sky Glass already have all BBC regions/channels in HD). However a new information slate (which is currently hidden ahead of appearing on Freeview LCN 799 in a few days time) states that BBC One SD will be reduced to a single national version on satellite without any regional news, ahead of all BBC SD channels closing on satellite later in the year. Therefore anyone still using an old Sky Digibox, Sky+ box, Freesat SD, or any other non-HD capable satellite receiver will need to upgrade their equipment in order to continue receiving BBC channels.

Freeview viewers in England will also find the national version of BBC One HD on 101 will be replaced with regional versions of BBC One HD in early 2023, however no timescale has been announced for any BBC SD channels to close on Freeview at this time. This will bring an end to the red screen during regional news programmes on BBC One HD. Freeview viewers will continue to receive regional news in SD as well as HD.

GREAT! movies | free and easy
Monday 21 November 2022 5:17PM

Lesley: You're predicted to be able to receive the local multiplex (which carries Great Movies Christmas) on UHF channel 35 from both Crystal Palace and Reigate transmitters. Do you get London Live on Freeview channel 8? If so, retune and the Great Movies channels should appear. If you don't have London Live, try carrying out a manual tune on UHF channel 35 (the option can be found somewhere in the menu/settings on most TVs - post the make and model if you can't find it).

Alan: PSB2 has definitely NOT been switched to DVB-T2 on any transmitter. That would be a major change which would make numerous commercial channels unavailable on a few million older TVs. Are all the cards being connected to the same aerial? What signal strength and quality readings do you get for PSB2 on each card? Do the DVB-T cards have any issues receiving PSB1 or COM4/5/6?
